The "horreo" is a typical construction from the north of the Iberian Peninsula used traditionally to store maize and other cereals.
The most antique image of the horreo is a a miniature that illustrates the “Cantigas de Santa María del Rey Alfonso X El Sabio” and that dates back to 1262.
Our present horreo is known as horreo mariñan it’s characterised by being made of chestnut wood and its dimensions are variable.
Actually the horreo is still used as a grain store or as a decorative element for its great beauty.
